What is a transponder key?
A transponder key is a car key with a small microchip inside the head. When you turn the key or press the start button, the chip sends a unique code to the car’s immobiliser. If the code matches, the engine starts. If it doesn’t, the car stays immobilised, even if the blade fits the ignition.
That is why a key copied at a hardware store often turns the barrel but won’t start the engine. The blade is right, but the chip has not been programmed to your car. Most cars on Australian roads today use a transponder chip key, a remote key with a chip, or a smart key.
Transponder chip key replacement
If your transponder key is lost, broken or no longer starts the car, we can replace it at your home, work or wherever the car is parked. A replacement covers two jobs:
- Cutting the blade so it turns the ignition and the door locks.
- Programming the chip so the immobiliser accepts the new key.
We supply, cut and program transponder keys, remote keys, smart keys and proximity keys for most makes. If you still have a working key, we can add a spare. If every key is lost, see our lost car key replacement service.
Car transponder key programming: how it works
- Identify the key. We check the make, model and year to confirm which chip and blade your car uses.
- Cut the key. We cut the blade to suit your locks and ignition.
- Program the chip. We connect our programming equipment to the car and register the new key with the immobiliser.
- Test everything. We check that the engine starts and that the locks and any remote buttons work before we leave.
How much does a transponder key cost in Perth?
Vehicle keys start from $95, with no call-out fee. The final price depends on the type of key (plain chip key, remote key or smart key) and on your car’s make and model. Call 0433 933 223 with your car details for an exact quote before we come out.
Transponder key, remote key or smart key?
- Transponder chip key: a normal metal key with a chip in the plastic head. No buttons.
- Remote key: a key with lock and unlock buttons. It usually has a transponder chip as well, so both the remote and the chip need programming.
- Smart or proximity key: stays in your pocket or bag. The car detects it and you press a button to start. See smart key vs proximity key.
Not sure which one you have? Call us and describe your key, and we will tell you.
