Car Key Programming in Perth | Smart Key vs. Proximity Key
What is a proximity key? It is a smart key that lets you unlock and start your car without pressing a button, as long as the key is in your pocket or bag. Car Key Rescue programs and replaces proximity keys on the spot for most makes and models anywhere in Perth.
At Car Key Rescue, we specialise in the latest automotive key technology. With modern vehicles becoming more advanced, the lines between smart keys and proximity keys can seem blurred. But understanding the difference is important — especially when you need replacement or programming services.
Smart Keys: Convenience in Your Pocket
A smart key is an electronic key that allows you to unlock, lock, and even start your vehicle without inserting a traditional key. Smart keys often feature remote start capabilities, push-button ignition, and boot release—all activated by a simple button press. These keys use encrypted signals to communicate with your vehicle’s onboard computer, making them both convenient and secure.
Smart keys usually look like a small fob with buttons. They work in tandem with your vehicle’s antennas to detect your presence and authorise access or ignition.
Proximity Keys: Hands-Free Access
A proximity key is a type of smart key that takes convenience a step further. As long as the key is on your person—say, in your bag or pocket—you can unlock and start your car without pressing any buttons at all. Proximity sensors in the car detect the key within a certain range (usually 2-3 feet), allowing you to open doors with a touch and start the car with a push button.
All proximity keys are smart keys, but not all smart keys are proximity-enabled. That’s an important distinction when it comes to programming and replacement.
