Why has my car key remote stopped working?

At Car Key Rescue we are often asked this question – why has my immobiliser remote suddenly stopped working? Well, there can be a few reasons. Sometimes the car key remote will stop working simply because the battery inside requires changing. We all use our car key remotes a lot and sometimes forget that they do need a battery to keep working.

Many car key remotes can be opened by an adult and the battery changed. Some styles of remote or proximity keys don’t facilitate a battery change and that’s when you’ll need our services for a replacement key.

The other reason the car remote might fail is because the transponder chip inside has become damaged or lost. If you do change the battery inside, do so carefully, ensuring the transponder chip remains intact. If you lose or damage the chip inside, it will no longer communicate with the car’s immobiliser system.

We always recommend keeping your car keys away from children and the elements (heat, water etc). Think of your remote as a mini computer – it needs careful treatment!

Our Dayton customer this week needed a spare car key for their HSV Commodore after their transponder inside their Holden key wasn’t working. They contacted us unsure of why their key no longer worked, only to realise the chip inside had been damaged.
